Head of School
Mr. Hoch earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible with a concentration in Education from Cairn University. He then went on to earn a Master's in religion from Reformed Theological Seminary as well as a Master's in school leadership from The University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Redeemer Classical School, he served at Delaware County Christian School for 11 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He and his wife, Julianna, have three children. Mr. Hoch is extremely grateful that the Lord has led him to Redeemer Classical School.
Mrs. Teresa Patton received her Bachelor's Degree from Virginia Tech in Child Development and Elementary Education and has been teaching in public, private and home-schooling environments for almost 30 years. In addition to teaching, she has been very active in curriculum development for Redeemer. She enjoys traveling, hiking and enjoying the outdoors with her family. Mrs. Patton has been with Redeemer since 2004.
Director of Development
Mrs. Jaye Brumfield earned her B.A. in Communications and Spanish from James Madison University in 1995. Shortly after, she began her career with the Bridgewater College Advancement Office. During the subsequent years, she continued to hone her design, writing and marketing skills working at JMU, PwC, an advertising agency, her own design firm, and a start-up tech company. Jaye has been involved with Redeemer since before her eldest enrolled in Kindergarten. She lives in Bridgewater with her husband and two daughters.
Mrs. Holly Michael graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood education. Moving to Harrisonburg, she began working at Woodland Montessori School. She went on to receive her teaching degree in Montessori education. She taught at Woodland for six years building a foundation in their primary education. She is very excited to be teaching about the love of Christ.
Mrs. Shernae Storella received her bachelor's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Recreation Parks and Tourism. After graduating, she returned to VCU taking educational courses for the lower elementary level. She home-schooled her two children for seven years, served as an Awana Leader, chaired a K-5 Children's Ministry, worked in a Daycare Facility and a parochial school. Shernae has served as Redeemer's Kindergarten teacher since 2005 and she loves teaching children how big and fun learning is. Shernae counts it an honor and a privilege to teach the children of our future.
Mrs. Sarah Plonsky received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at North Greenville University in Tigerville, SC. She has taught in public and private school classrooms, and has most recently been homeschooling four of her children. She has lived in many places in her life, but has decided that the Shenandoah Valley is by far her favorite, and hopes she never has to leave. Sarah and her husband James are, by God’s grace, successfully blending two families together, making their home of nine a busy (and often loud!) place! When she’s not occupied being a mom and teacher, Sarah enjoys keeping busy with activities at church, renovating their old Civil War-era home, gardening, and sewing. An ideal weekend would be one with NOTHING on the calendar!
Mrs. Tabitha Lookabill received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Covenant College. Following graduation she moved to Chiba, Japan, to teach 4th grade at a christian international school. She returned to Georgia and taught for three years in public school. Tabitha met her husband, Joshua, a JMU graduate, and moved to Harrisonburg in 2004. She taught first grade at Redeemer in 2006-07 before their first child was born and then taught kindergarten in 2011-12 before her last child was born. Tabitha is excited to be back teaching at Redeemer. She loves exploring God's world with children and how much fun learning can be especially in integrative classical education! Tabitha's hobbies include flower gardening, arts and crafts, Korean dramas and a good book!
Second Grade (co-teach)
Mrs. Grace Yoder received a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies with a minor in Early Childhood Education and also earned a certificate to teach Algebra I from James Madison University. Grace has traveled over Europe, which included a five week language study in Spain. She loves teaching in a Classical Christian environment where she can teach academics while glorifying and delighting in the Lord with 2nd graders!
Second Grade (co-teach)
Mrs. Julie Landes graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in elementary education and with a Master of Arts in teaching in 2010. She has taught 1st and 2nd grade at Redeemer since graduating from JMU. She enjoys teaching children that all things are created by and for the glory of God.
Mrs. Holly King received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Waterloo in Liberal Studies with a Peace and Conflict Studies minor. Growing up in Canada, Holly spent four years working for a church agency in Switzerland, the UK, and Germany before embarking on family life and settling in the Shenandoah Valley with her American husband. Holly has homeschooled some configuration of her children from 2007-2018 using the framework Classical Education. This, along with acting as the Chair of Children's Ministries at her church and co-leading a local Homeschool Co-op, have all allowed her to do what she loves: find ways to share her excitement about God's wonderful world — past, present, and future — with the next generation.
Mrs. Kendra Matter first discovered a passion for history, literature, and culture through studying art in high school and college. She went on to graduate from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Science in Art and a minor in Art History. Kendra has been involved in classical and Christian education for 15 years, from homeschooling to classroom instruction. Outside Redeemer you might find her hiking with family, coaching gymnastics, or reading Victorian literature on the front porch.
Mrs. Jane Fowler received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Virginia in Middle School Education and has been teaching in public, private and home-schooling environments for nearly 30 years. She currently teaches fifth grade. Jane is one of the founding teachers of Redeemer and has enjoyed watching Redeemer grow over the years. She is the chairperson for the history department at Redeemer and loves to hear the students recite the history timeline together. Jane has three grown and two grandchildren who she enjoys visiting as often as she can.
Grammar School PE
Mrs. Ashley Hormel graduated from the Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Social Work. She worked professionally in children's health and wellness prior to joining Redeemer. Ashley is thankful for the opportunity to teach children to glorify God in both their work and play, and by caring for the bodies He has given us. She enjoys teaching sportsmanship to the grammar school children while they learn new, traditional, and unique ways to be physically fit. Ashley enjoys being active herself and can often be found out on a long run or hiking or playing games with her three children (all at Redeemer) and husband.
Logic School Science & PE
Mrs. Heather Dowdy graduated summa cum laude from James Madison University with distinction in Geology and a minor in Middle Education. She has worked in both public and private settings as a teacher, a tutor, and an aid to students of all ability levels. She has also enjoyed helping as a teacher in the after school program and ESL classes through her church's Hispanic ministry. She is thankful for the opportunity to teach science in an environment where she can point her students toward the wonderful Creator of this magnificent world in which we live.
Logic School Latin & Literature
Mrs. Annie Leach graduated from Wake Forest University with a major in English and a minor in education. She and her husband, Bill, are among the founders of Redeemer, and they are increasingly thankful that their five children have attended RCS. Annie enjoys studying words and syntax in her favorite languages. She relishes the opportunity to share the wonder of words with her Latin and literature students. Annie has loved helping others improve their writing since her college days. She considers her responsibility to train RCS students to excel in written communication a great privilege. Annie grew up on Tampa Bay and savors chances to be around water. She also loves making and eating Cuban food, laughing and playing games with her family, and sitting by the fire reading Russian literature.
Logic School History & Geography
Andrew Parker earned his Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Maryland. Spending his summers as a camp counselor helped him develop a passion for working with and instructing children. Before coming to Redeemer, Andrew worked with Reformed University Fellowship at James Madison University. In his spare time, you'll probably find him in a coffee shop reading the latest historical biography.
Logic School Mathematics
Mrs. Colleen Ernst graduated from James Madison University with her bachelors degree in Mathematics in 2011 and with her Master of Arts in Teaching in 2012 through JMU's five-year program. She truly enjoys teaching math in a Christian school, and her students love having Colleen as their teacher ... especially on Pi day.
7th/8th Grade Logic
Mr. Milton Matter graduated from James Madison University with a degree in philosophy. He served on the board of Redeemer for many years, and currently serves on the JMU School of Liberal Arts Alumni Board, the Mars Hill Audio Board of Directors, the board of Cafe Veritas, and as an elder at Christ Presbyterian Church.
6th/7th Grade Bible
Mr. Ryan Bever is the pastor at Grace & Truth Reformed Presbyterian Mission Church in Harrisonburg, VA. Ryan graduated from Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh with a Masters of Divinity in May of 2017, and shortly thereafter received a call to serve as pastor at Grace & Truth. He and his wife Betsy have four children: Matthias, Madeline, Maelie, and Mason. The Bever family has enjoyed the transition to the Valley and are hopeful that Grace & Truth will become a well-established local congregation. Ryan has a passion for preaching and teaching God’s Word and looks forward to teaching Bible to Redeemer students.
6th Grade Study Skills
Mrs. Sarah Hughes graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Art History. She worked as a paralegal for several years before staying at home with her first born. Her daughter began attending kindergarten at Redeemer in 2013. With the addition of another daughter attending Redeemer in 2016, there were more opportunities to help in the classroom and around the school. Her third daughter joined her sisters at Redeemer in 2019. Sarah is thankful for the opportunity to work alongside her children and to be a part of a loving school community.
Art & Art History
Mrs. Laura Carpenter graduated from James Madison University in 2000 with a Bachelors of Science in Media Arts and Design. She taught art classes in a variety of settings and in 2004 she joined the newly-launched Redeemer Classical School as the art teacher. In March of 2010, with the birth of her second child, Laura took a break from the classroom. In the Fall of 2016, she returned to RCS with renewed excitement. Outside of the classroom Laura volunteers for the Pediatric Congenital Heart Association of Virginia and enjoys biking with her family and gardening. Laura has two children that attend RCS.
Mrs. Kath Wissinger has directed youth handbells since 1988 at Massanutten Presbyterian Church. A composer herself, she encourages her class to create their own pieces (Fog Train, Edakafad, Misty Moon) and writes pedagogical pieces (Accolade, Suite Praise, Hyfrydol, A Tree and a Star, Campana Sonos, Many and Great, Laudare and others.) Kath is the founding artistic director of MOSAIC Handbell Ensemble and is the adult handbell director at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church. She is an active clinician at ringing events nationwide and coordinates the "Bells in Education" Column for Overtones,the national guild's magazine. She also chairs the CHIME Loan program for Area 3. Kath has a degree in geology from Miami University (BA 1978 Oxford, Ohio) and worked as a National Park Service Ranger and environmental educator. She loves bells and knows they are a superb tool for teaching music theory and performance and for developing discipline, focus, fellowship and cooperation.
Grammar School Music
Miss Cameron Dusman graduated from Grove City College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, concentration in percussion. She taught elementary music at a Christian school in Charlottesville for five years and now is pursuing a Master's Degree in Music Education at James Madison University. She's thankful for the opportunity to teach in a school where music can point children towards the creativity, beauty, order, and goodness of their Creator. Besides music she enjoys traveling, cooking, and exploring new hiking trails in the beautiful state of Virginia.
After School Program
Mrs. Suzi Slater graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education. She has working in both private and public schools teaching remedial reading and math, and elementary physical education. She has lived the last five years in Juneau, AK and is looking forward to returning to the Shenandoah Valley and working with students at Redeemer. She loves hiking, spending time with family and focusing on health and fitness.
Mrs. Vicki Becker joined the Redeemer staff after being a stay at home mom for 25 years. During that time she homeschooled her kids, Kayla, Kyle and Brady, for 14 years and helped run a homeschool co-op for several years. She and her husband, Greg, are now empty-nesters with their last child in college. To continue in their parenting roles they have a golden retriever named Ripken. Vicki enjoys music, sports (especially soccer and baseball), and spending time with her family and friends.
