Redeemer to Purchase Keezletown Elementary
Thursday, July 27th, 2006Redeemer Classical School’s offer to purchase Keezletown Elementary School was accepted by the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors at their board meeting on 7/26/06.
The present Keezletown Elementary was built in 1916 and served as a county elementary school until 2001 when it was closed after Peak View Elementary was opened. A brief history of the school and the property can be found here. Redeemer’s board made an unsolicited offer for the school several months ago with the prospect of renovating the school and restoring it to it’s former glory. It has been the intention of Redeemer Classical School from it’s inception to become an integral member of the Harrisonburg / Rockingham County community. The purchase and restoration of Keezletown Elementary, a building rich in local educational history, helps to further this goal.
The school is located in Keezletown on 6.9 acres at the west base of Massanutten mountain and includes the Keezletown Communuty Cannery on the property. The building is located in a picturesque setting, nestled between rolling farmland and Massanutten. It is also in a strategic location as there are currently no private school options on the east side of the county thus making Redeemer Classical School a prime schooling option for families who live in the neighboring communities.
Finally, Redeemer is committed to seeing the cannery operation continue. This is a unique feature of the property and is an important assest for our community that must be maintained and allowed to flourish. The Cannery is also a unique educational opportunity for students at Redeemer to learn first-hand about a connection to the agricultural heritage of our community.
Redeemer’s board is assembling a committee to determine the extent and cost of renovations needed before the school can be opened for classes. If you would like to support the renovation of Keezletown Elementary you can partner with us either financially, or through in-kind donations of building materials or skilled labor. Please call our headmaster, Dr. Ike Lassiter at 540-578-1242, or email us at info@redeemerclassical.org to find out more.
Redeemer Classical School is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, and thus any donations for the renovation of Keezletown Elementary made to RCS are tax-deductible and will be used to invest in the lives of a new generation of students in the school.
Soli Deo Gloria
